Sunamganj Science and Technology University submits memorandum demanding relocation.
The citizens of Sunamganj have submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner demanding the relocation of Sunamganj Science and Technology University from the Shantiganj Upazila to Sunamganj Sadar, designating the district headquarters as its location.
On Sunday afternoon, this memorandum was presented to District Commissioner Dr. Mohammad Ilyas Mia by various professionals from the city.
Present at the time of submitting the memorandum were: Public Prosecutor of Sunamganj Court Advocate Mallik Moin Uddin Ahmed Sohel, Senior Lawyer Humayun Manzoor Chowdhury, General Secretary of the District Bar Advocate Sherenur Ali, member of the District BNP Advisory Committee Md. Akbar Ali, Rezoul Haque, Advocate Masuk Alam, Advocate Abdul Haque, Advocate Ziaur Rahim Shaheen, Advocate Abul Kalam Azad, Advocate Nurul Islam Nurul, ATM Misbah, Deputy Amir of the District Jamaat Advocate Shamsuddin, Advocate Enam Ahmed, leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Imon Doza, and President of the Student Party Jahangir Alam, among others.
Confirming the submission of the memorandum, General Secretary of the District Lawyers' Association Advocate Sherenur Ali stated that the then Planning Minister M.
Mannan had influenced the decision to designate a location for the university campus in the nearby Shantiganj Upazila. Despite the availability of government khas land in the district town, he secured many mega projects, depriving the city of development.
There has been controversy regarding the location of the university from the beginning.
We believe that a major part of the district should be around the city.
The location designated for the campus should be changed to a site near the city.
In this regard, we are ready to provide all kinds of support to the government.
It is noteworthy that on December 30, 2019, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved Sunamganj Science and Technology University.
Subsequently, on November 28, 2018, a law was passed in the National Parliament.
After the law was passed, the university's educational activities began in a temporary building beside the Sunamganj-Sylhet regional highway in the Shantiganj Upazila. Since then, discussions have started regarding the construction of a permanent site for the university in the Sadar Upazila.
